KKRSS was founded in 1994 by the distinguished Khambu Rais of Darjeeling town. Ever since, KKRSS has been organizing various events and cultural programs to raise awareness of Khambu culture among the Khambu people of the Darjeeling hills. In October 1995, KKRSS organized its very first cultural program, Kiranti Utsav, at Capital Hall. During the occasion, distinguished personalities such as Dr. Richard Keith Sprigg, Shri Shiva Kumar Rai, and Dr. Novel Kishor Rai were present.
The same day, a Sova Yatra of the Kiranti Utsav was also held in Darjeeling town in 1995 and ended at Chowrasta, following which the first-ever Khambu Sili was performed at Chowrasta by the Sili troupe from Jhapa, Nepal.
